it takes eight large sprays of orchid at the least to create a display pleasant to the eye, and costs the earth besides, but a single stalk of wax flower, broken into small sprigs, fill out a three-inch tall bud vase perfectly. you'd never think a filler flower could be so pretty on its own, in a wayside flower, just-picked way, and a single delphinium, can add a cluster of bright purple that draws the eye. and there are still so many other kinds of striking small flowers i could get in future: freesias and lisianthus, sweetpea flowers and nerines, for every week of the year!
