this morning i was having breakfast and reading the copy of rupert brooke's letters from america, which yen gave to me at the airport last friday, and laughed aloud when i saw this essay, which he wrote when visiting boston and harvard in 1913. after attending commencement, he observed: "The american universities appear still to dream of the things of this world. they keep putting up the most wonderful and expensive buildings. but they do not pay their teachers well."
