i am beginning to appreciate living in west cambridge. at least, i'm not in west cambridge, just on the neighbourhood border, but very much on this side of mass ave. on this cambridge neighbourhood map you can see all the boundaries and read descriptions. most of harvard graduate dorms, where most of us live now, are in 8. the yard is that big square in the left corner of 6. von lives in 7, by the river. most of us, those who haven't moved to somerville, have moved to 9, but the 9-ers i know are generally up on the porter square end, 9 bordering on somerville. i've moved to 9 too, but right on the 10 border. in anycase i can tell as i approach west cambridge from the state of the pavement. i use my suitcase as a trolley to ferry things to garden street. it's bumpity bump and lots of unladylike squealing and squawking and lunging for overturned boxes and cases, and then the main road, which is difficult to cross, pot holes and wild drivers who charge on. and lights that have forgotten what it is like to change. yet once i cross the mighty river that is massachusetts avenue, my suitcase rolls along smoothly, the scenery improves, flowering courtyards and windowboxes and i feel happier.
