you really must listen to the radio four alistair cooke tribute. (upper right corner, plays on realplayer.) a fascinating life of cooke, of his remarkable seemingly stream-of-conscious style and vanguard attitude towards broadcasting, and his versatility and brilliance in composing, politics, journalism, radio. presented intelligently and tastefully by people who had worked with him, and full of assorted snippets of radio and cultural history. incredibly fascinating. plus, on it you can hear recordings of cooke's distinctive voice, both as a young man - which i have never heard before, obviously - as well as those of him as a very old man - the voice i was used to growing up. really awesome. if you don't want to listen to his letters, at least listen to his life.
