medieval trivia for the day:

medieval dreams are divided into predictive dreams and non-predictive dreams. predictive dreams are of three kinds:

1) somnium, an enigmatic dream requiring interpretation;
2) visio, a prophetic dream representing the future literally;
3) oraculum, the future as revealed by a revered person or god who also declares appropriate action.

the causes of dreams are either exterior or internal. exterior dreams are excellent as they are divine-sent revelations (somnium coeleste) but interior dreams are of two kinds, both not to be paid attention to.

1) somnium naturale, dreams of a bodily cause (e.g. eating the wrong thing, or as simpson puts it "cheese dreams.")
2) somnium animale, dreams with psychological causes (i.e. exam dreams)

so now you know.
