flaubert is supposed to have said about the writing of madame bovary: "in writing this book i am like a man who would try to play the piano with lead balls on each finger. but when i have learned my fingering, if i happen upon a tune to my taste and can play with my arms raised up, perhaps i shall do something good."

i definitely have lead balls on my fingers right now.
