the ancient chinese had a floral calendar, where each lunar month was synonymous with a flower, so that one could say 菊月, chrysanthemum month, and everyone would know the ninth month was referred to. they are, and i'm reasonably sure i've got all the right scientific and common names:

一月梅花; Prunus mume sieb et zuce, the japanese flowering apricot.

二月杏花; Prunus armeniaca, the apricot blossom.

三月桃花; Prunus persica, the peach blossom.

四月蔷薇; Rosa multiflora Thunb, the multiflora rose.

五月榴花; Punica granatum, the pomegranate flower.

六月荷花; Nelumbo nucifera, the water lotus.

七月葵花; Helianthus annuus, the sunflower.

八月桂花; Osmanthus fragrans, the sweet olive.

九月菊花; Dendranthema morifolium, the chrysanthemum.

十月芙蓉; Hibiscus mutabilis, the confederate rose.

十一月山茶; Camellia japonica, the camellia.

腊月蜡梅; Chimonanthus praecox, wintersweet.
