julian and minzhi discuss their love lives

julian: maybe we have to find people for each other. maybe it doesn't work when you try to find someone yourself.

me: but we might end up hating each other if we don't like the person the other's found!

julian: only for a little while! then we'll forgive each other. we're very forgiving!

me: forgiving? me? i haven't even forgiven su-lin for her a1!

julian: but i bet i could find someone who would like you that you would like!

me: *astonished* then why the hell haven't you got on to it? don't just sit there telling me!

later, crossing the road on julian's arm, i complain. "bend it a little more than that, how can i hang on like this?"

julian: yes but i am not very good at these things.

me: *chiding* darling you have to learn to be a straight man sometimes for my sake.

julian: *meekly* yes my dear, pygmalionise me.

julian says we'll never find anyone, any of our set he means, we're all too difficult and unfanciable so in the end we'll all move into a retirement village together and give lectures on microbiology and old norse poetry every evening. anyone who dates any one of us will have to be inspected by the rest. and su-lin would be overriden regularly of course, if she continues to insist on not letting us bring people home.
