had dinner last night with kai-ting, who has applied to the distinguished majors program, and will be writing with stephen arata, on the subject of time in the modern novel. her authors include virginia woolf, ian mcewan, john fowles and jeanette winterson. i can't help but want to grab a little credit for the inclusion of winterson - because i knew she'd never read winterson before - and this could only be because - and she confirmed it - i'd given her art objects at the end of last semester - because of the essays on woolf - which i thought she might like. she's now reading the passion and oranges. i do think though, that sexing the cherry would be more suited to her purpose, if "time" is to be the subject. the passion would work too, as a kind of "historical" novel. not oranges, nor written on the body. the powerbook, maybe...art and lies, perhaps, though not quite...i should probably look up one of byatt's essays for her too - i think fowles and winterson were in it. hm.
