i don't understand the globe's persistent rapture over the boston ballet. it's almost like the straits times in its proprietary benevolence towards its own. the review of la sylphide from yesterday which praised the performance and dismissed the ballet stands precisely opposite to my feelings on the same subject. i admire the boston ballet which despite its size and perpetual funding problems manages to put up strong programs each season but this is the third time i've attended in five months, and each time it would leave me feeling unsatisfied: it is adequate, it is competent, it satisfies my eye-lust for ballet, but it is not in anyway a company to dazzle your heart. i can't at all feel for it, although i want so much to. it simply is never as good as i'd like it to be, and it is not in the same class as, say, the nyc ballet. in language familiar to the singaporeans reading this - it is not a world-class ballet. sorry. but it isn't. much to say about la sylphide, but i will to dinner. to be continued.
