'nearly a third' is accurate in strict numbers but give quite the wrong impression: the five moving out are the group of very small ones next to the CCA; all the large ones are staying put. i'd agree with them about the failure to foster a local collecting culture (to complement the private wealth market -- it is mostly scruffy layabouts like me who like to look but cannot afford to buy) and that the district had not been promoted well until the last 18 months. but to be honest those that are leaving are precisely the ones i've consistently found disappointing, at best commonplace, and i've made a point of dropping in before every CCA event: only rarely does a piece speak to me. even space cottonseed, which i've been loyally visiting (because of the korean connection) i stop in at from sheer dutifulness, and only briefly. i don't think the location should be blamed: psychologically i find arndt and mizuma as inaccessible. i feel reluctant to make the trek, but when i get there i always learn something new, see something i don't expect. shall we turn back, no, go on, see what they've got in store for us. the destination rewards the journey. but the blk 47 galleries? after repeated disappointments, mentally the space becomes arid for the viewer. i factor likelihood in my choice: what chance an interesting piece? no, at the fork i turn left instead of right. that way lies barrenness.
