i think i'm going to learn malay! as soon as i find a community centre that holds classes. zak's learning chinese so i don't see why i shouldn't learn malay. should be easier for me than for him! i was just looking at this morning's papers and the new proposals on letting students opt for second language in one of the other race's mother tongues, something zak was talking about a couple of months back, the need for the freedom to choose. and it seems to me that lately i've been hearing malays speaking chinese quite a bit. well twice lah, once at ntuc and another time at the fruitsellers, i heard malay ladies saying "xiexie ni" as they made their transactions. (well okay, so i can say terima kasih, (can't spell) but that's probably not the same thing.) so i don't see why i shouldn't learn malay. my dad said that in his day all teachers had to pass standard one malay only he joined sji and it wasn't a requirement so he dropped out of his malay course. he thinks we can both go take classes. i could write zak malay letters and he could laugh at me and red-ink everything!
