my nasi lemak did not involve any pandan leaf and is full of substitutions, to wit:

cucumber: grated japanese cucumbers and radish
ikan bilis: flying fish roe and crushed rice crackers
chicken wing: beef stirfried with dark chocolate
egg: a fried egg (that's the only traditional part)

in fact, it isn't nasi lemak at all, she admits, but she meant well.

(i wonder if i can get a tub of ikan bilis. i seem to remember e-ching once wrote that she brought ikan bilis to yale with her and all her american friends were creeped out by their eyes, but a kenyan friend came by and immediately tucked in delightedly because they have something like ikan bilis in kenya too.)
