"fancy seeing you here," sniggered von, as we bumped into each other just outside boylston hall. fancy that, i agreed, and took the opportunity to haul him off to inman square because my stipend had arrived early and i owed him $20 for assorted reasons. we had the long-anticipated dinner at the very charming o'cantinho cafe - we had the favas beans and linguica, (extra garlic please, said von to the waitress,) chicken giblets with piri piri sauce, a tiny cod cake (for me) and a bowl of calf liver (von: just like your mother used to make, if you had a teochew mother!) with a serving of bread and fried potatoes. all that, if you can believe it, came to only $16. we had the seat by the window in the picture, which means von was molesting the potted plants on the window sill all the time. and after dinner we took out white bean cakes and something puffy what was it you had von? (sad though that the egg tarts weren't anywhere as good as the ones in singapore.) then we went down the road to the famous christina's home-made ice cream - did you ever think that fig and pecan can be an ice-cream flavour? it was really good too! and then it was the trek back onto campus to different libraries and pretend-work.
