i cannot say i did not have misgivings about boston declaring a new day of memorial: this should not be our 9/11 (do we spend too much of these last fifteen years, memorialising and chronicling our trauma -- and what capital do we let politicians wring out of tragedy? -- )

but ultimately i cannot deny that, shorn of all ideological considerations, i am glad for 'one boston day'. have i not just seen for myself here, mere weeks ago, the powerful good -- the groundswell of goodwill and generosity -- that can come of a city rising above grief? why shouldn't any other city be entitled to that too? and when all is said and done i love bostonians and boston for their quiet strength (for you oh you also were my home.)
