ian carmichael is very good at knocking people down. over break, i saw him do a splendid "silly young ass" with the ridiculous name of henry palfrey, leaping onto a bus and knocking down a girl, spilling her parcels and laddering her hose, and then being most voluble in apology, encouraging her to call him names - which so reminded me of harriet's meringues. (the sudden overlap of images - carmichael as a young man knocking janette scott down, carmichael in later life playing wimsey, st george as a young peter, parcels rolling everywhere.) that's in the 1960 school of scoundrels with the wonderful alastair sim. you know maybe i could do cultural studies instead and write about radio history and british comedies in the 50s and 60s.
