oh oh oh.

this morning, sarah, abandonning her ham sandwich, ("it's too thick, mum!") demands some of the chai tao kueh my cousin was eating. is it too hot? asks my cousin, watching her take a bite. "no," says sarah, with an impatient toss of her head. "no, it's not too hot. i'm a peranakan girl!"

*whoop*

ten minutes later, ariel tottered over and asked for some chai tao kueh too. my cousin was more cautious here, and gave him just a little piece.

    is it hot?
    no
then he goes to his sister: "i am peranakan also!"

*double whoop*

i don't know which is funnier, peranakan-ess as credential for spice-tolerance, or spice-tolerance as constitutive of peranakanhood.
