michael williams makes a good doctor watson to clive merrison's holmes. i like them much better than gielgud/richardson, (they were too stiff, too restrained, although the gielgud/richardson productions featured orson welles who was a terrifying, reptilian moriarty.) i think i might only have heard one or two rathbone/bruce episodes. i needn't say why i don't like nigel bruce.

on that note, gabriel woolf is proving to be a very decent inspector parker. i feel this because i have been much vexed with the two parkers in the tv sayerses. grievously miscast they were! mark eden was not too terrible he was the right sort of age and had the amiable mien described in the first book but ian carmichael was so old by then parker looked like his slightly bemused nephew. and in the petherbridge they gave parker a toothbrush moustache and made him exactly like your worst idea of an accountant. horrible suits he wore.

and don't start me on bunter.
