today dan donoghue came into class and said, how do you say the red sox won the world series in old english? we gave this some thought, and someone volunteered: but surely in old english it must be easier to say "the red sox slew the cardinals." (just read cynewulf and cyneheard, lots of blood and slaughter.) in the end, we came up with (darn it! i just realised don't have an old english font set. need to download one, in meantime take my th's as thorns or eths.):

tha readan soccas gewunnon tha worulde endebrydnesse.

and

tha readen soccas ofslogon tha cardinalan (loanword, let's accent it on the first)

and then, for good measure, and in much more idiomatic old english, a third:

tha readan soccas geweoldan tha wael-stowe. (lit: they controlled the slaughter-place)

so now, ladies and gentlemen, we have seen the applications old english.
