started listening to the ruan lingyu soundtrack, which i stumbled on, and which you can stream in its entirety here. i remember addy was looking for it when she was writing her thesis on ruan lingyu. i did not know that tracy huang sang the theme song! (there are two different renderings - you can play the first and last back to back - one is 1930ish zhouxuan-style, the last is more or less in her natural voice - a modern day version (but still backward-looking and most enticing) actually tracy huang sounds rather like pan yueyun here.)

and now i really have to watch ruan lingyu. if it's back in lamont i shall check it out on friday - that is - if i am very good and go to my appointments and get through the rest of the week, i will reward myself. for a start, i can finish reading kant and burke on the beautiful and the sublime, and translate the next 50 lines of the battle of maldon, and read the book of the duchess, and make a handout for my elegies class on the balder myth in the sonnatorrek (which i am still having trouble spelling) and go over the angel island material to see if there is a paper topic in there... hah!
