if servants were once again to become a part of american daily life what would you be? heath says he would make an excellent valet. he would be brilliant at that too. i am too disorganised to be a housekeeper (i thought of the remains of the day) and i don't like responsibility. i can't see myself as a serving wench - i am bound to be dismissed after three days for dropping a tray. lady's maids overhear a great deal that is of interest, but are subject to their mistresses' bad temper, and i've got too much of a temper myself. and i hate any kind of washing up and am no good at cooking. housemaids are always carrying on with the stable boy or th chauffeur. very undignified. something indoors and educational. "i could be a governess," i decided. (owing to the dreadful way i have of trailing off the end of my sentences the next few moments were rather confusing and surreal, but i think i've sorted it out in my head.)

h: i don't think ladies are allowed to be governors.
m: no? (still thinking about governesses) there was susan! sto helit.
h: is she the one who became queen?
m: that's magrat i think. susan has the poker.
h: i suppose you could be a governess.
m: *meekly* yes.
