ariel is most amusing!

yesterday winnie asked sarah to fetch her sewing box to sew on some loose straps on sarah's blouse. this is the sewing box winnie was given when she got married. (a sewing basket is a traditional part of a singapore chinese bride's dowry.)*

sarah, handing over the sewing box: mummy, when i get married i'll get one too right?
winnie: yes of course.
ariel, earnestly: what about me? when i get married can i have one also?

*or at least for the teochews it is, though i'm almost sure the other dialect groups do too, because my mater had one and she's hokkien-cantonese. she was very disappointed because she wanted peanut candy but got the roast pig instead. i on the other hand have made up my mind to not to marry someone teochew because my being teochew already takes care of the peanut sweetmeats and besides teochew mother-in-laws are passive-aggressive, i point you to my various aunts and grandaunts, and the mothers of choonping, vaughn and su-lin.)
