hmm. brown's only what, 50 minutes away by commuter rail?

brown university singapore lecture series, april 14-15.

i don't really want to hear alfian go on and on and on about the marginalisation of the malays though. [question: why is alfian called a malay gay rights activist and playwright (on the page with speaker biographies) but they don't says cherian george is an "indian academic and journalist" or shirley geok-lin lim is a "chinese author and academic?" we all know who alfian sa'at is. and i don't know what being malay has to do with it. at least his malay nationalism is well-known and the the focus of his talk, but why should that be writeninto his biography? i expect he was one of those who opposed race as a category on ics and quotas on schools admissions. also, there is something not quite right with the prose on the whole website- nothing explicitly wrong - but style needs editting. though i'd like to hear from cherian george. i suppose i can come back same day by commuter rail so i don't need accommodation. darryl wants to go too.

aha! yvonne, are you feeling homesick for brown? :P
