i've never until today witnessed a car accident - and i saw this one clearly, and from start to finish - it happened barely two metres before me - the driver shot through a cross-junction a full two seconds after the lights had changed to red (i'd actually already stepped off the pavement - this was on north bridge road between the supreme court and funan centre, he had no business driving so fast on that kind of road and in that part of town!!) and slammed into a taxi that was just coming slowly through the green light on high st. the side of the taxi was heavily dented and what was worse, the two passengers in the taxi were old ah mahs. you know, your classic hobbling ah mah in typical pyjamas pantsuits. neither of them was injured, fortunately, i stayed long enough to ascertain that much, but they did look shaken, and i was very surprised they were not worse - old people are prone to orthopaedic injuries, aren't they? there were large shards of glass and metal all over the yellow box - and the bonnet of the car was pushed all the way back - like a snarl, was the overwhelming impression - and later, when traffic was able to move through the junction again, i heard loud popping sounds - the cars must be driving over some of the glass. (that happened to paul temple once, i found myself thinking.) i tried to rememer the car license plate so that if the police wanted witnesses later on i could pipe up, but as i arrived at the arts house accusations of being late from c & p and hurried explanations as we rushed into the theatre put the numbers out of my mind. (very short term memory, you know.) at any rate it starts with sbv. cindy: you're not singaporean enough. other people would make sure to write down the number to buy 4d!
