codeswitching, julian complained, is a terrible effort. fun, but tiring. julian said that he recently lapsed into singapore english and said to an american friend that he was "going straight" (from concert to party) and his friend replied that he would like to leave his criminal record behind too. (poach and i were just talking about this lately, that in this country we take "straight buses," instead of crooked ones.) i've said much more embarrassing things, i comforted julian. once, i said near the end of a tea party, ah, i guess i should be making a move soon, and everyone looked at me very queerly, and then i remembered what it means in american. (for the non-singaporeans, i guess i better make a move = i best be going on now = i should get going soon. i forget which of these is american. maybe neither is. one of you tell me)
