my thai basil (rescued from an untimely end on the compost heap) was flourishing, but now the butterflies have got at it and laid eggs all over the leaves. if they hadn't evolved from moths the bats could get them, but i don't know what would hunt a butterfly, and in any case they don't live terribly long to be hunted, and are reasonably decorative in their lifetime. if i sprayed insecticide on the basil i wouldn't be able to eat it, but if i plucked off all the affected leaves there wouldn't be many (if any) left for the eating. i can't be having with this, she huffs. (a thought: can you practise headology on caterpillars?)
