i think you're being rather uncharitable, julian my love. there wasn't that much nakedness (although you cannot teach 15 year old ri boys to catwalk, it is true, and warren m's false nails got painted a hideous shade of orange) and it was a better play than cp is now claiming. i will withdraw bildungsroman if you like as being a mode more psychologically complex that flight had been, but there were plenty of elements of coming of age stories - patriarchs having heart attacks and young men being seduced by the glamour of magazines and bad women, moral revelations come too late and prodigal sons returning after the funeral. and it's full of wonderful teochew nostalgia. how can you not like a play in which there was kalipok (hair) and ang cor li (fish) ? and kalipok-combing lau sing with her joss paper?

and leaving cp's script out of it for now, it was really a lovely, thoughtful production.

this is the bloodshed bit, isn't it? an outsider sees a play and the insider sees old so-and-so in a get-up and old memories of rivalries and resentment arise.

if there's one good thing that comes out of all this it is that we might get choonping blogging more. he's already started again, you know.
