the five-second review of assorted exhibitions:

moderns in our midst: jeremy san's architectural photography at the national mseum concourse, to accompany the singapore heritage society book launch of "our modern past", a book documenting the modernist architectural heritage of singapore. strange angles, beautiful shadows, beguiling and sad all at once, all the more if you recgonise the places. his hdb photography predates even darren soh's, i think, though there are resemblances. i want the book.

artscience late: one thursday night a month, mixed genre, experimental performances or performance art at the artscience museum. i've been trying to go to one of these for a year but have never been able to make it while one interesting performance after another slipped by. this was not the ideal performance, not perhaps to my taste (i would have prefered to see some of the dance ones) and julian poohpoohed the neurological aspects as scientifically unsound, but it was the last of the series: it was now or else. an unexpectedly large crowd; i became just a tad creeped out by the costume of the artist which puts me mind of a malignant but avant-garde monk. (perhaps, i mused, he is of the order of the monks of cool.) the difficulty is that even if there were a differential by what means can we compare this to anything else? difference is only meaningful if i can perceive what it is different from. as it is, if i should like a hallucinatory experience i daresay a drug might do the job; this was not it.
