should i buy an aubertin lusiads? aubertin and mickle are the only ones i seem to like, atkinson is lovely and lush and impressively so - i can't imagine any prose translation can be more delightful if one had to read it in prose - but the experience of reading epic poetry in prose translation is wrong. the medium is wrong. like watching the film of the book. the 1884 aubertin is nifty because in octava rima, and because it isn't modern (so at least some use to me) the mickle (1776, even better) is in heroic couplets and is very good too, but that's available online, so i'm not in as great a hurry to get it. i've got the fanshawe from eebo - obviously, because that's the most useful text to have, but i find it a strain to read. (i keep stumbling over the s's and f's. i know.) and the translation is highly confusing to me - i hardly ever know what's going on.
