this is a real question: why do we love vimes? or perhaps - why do you love vimes?

i was asking julian last night, why do we love him? it's easy to see why people love granny - so cool! so powerful! but why do we love vimes? julian says: because he is so correct - so exactly our concept of cool. though i'm not sure about that. because he really cares for the weak? carrot cares for everyone too - but we would never feel the same way about carrot (who, incidentally, is hard to make out too.) unconventional methods? all the really remarkable figures in pratchett are renegades - death, lu-tze - so that that is true too, but is only part of it. because he gives us a vision of justice - that is not the impersonal law but not private justice either - but the law embodied in the person? that's one reason. because he is the only one you've seen at every stage of his life - young idealistic vimes, down and out captain vimes, commander of the watch, duke of ankh-morpork, and as sergeant keel - so that his personality is the most complex - because he has a developmental history, this is your life, sam vimes?
