Tiffany Aching the main character appears much the same as in her previous books. However, as she is now nearly thirteen, she does appear to show some signs of interest in the attention of young men, namely Roland the son of the Baron. She also manages to attract the attention of the Wintersmith, the spirit of Winter when she inadvertantly joins in with the Dark Dance. During the first part of the book she is apprenticed to a witch called Miss Treason, who is blind and uses two sticks to walk.

The Wintersmith is the spirit of winter, the counterpart of the Summer Lady. When Tiffany takes part in the Dark Dance he becomes attracted to her and attempts to win her over with snowflakes in the shape of Tiffany, roses of ice and a massice Tiffany shaped iceberg. When he discovers that he cannot be with her because she is mortal he attempts to forge himself a human body using materials from a childrens rhyme.
